As tensions escalate between India and Pakistan, the Indian Premier League (IPL) is facing security challenges. The Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharmshala is set to host a match on May 11 between the Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, but there are indications that the venue may change.
Reports from a prominent cricket news outlet suggest that the match could be relocated to either the DY Patil Stadium or the Brabourne Stadium. Before this, Punjab is scheduled to compete against the Delhi Capitals on May 8, and there are discussions about possibly rescheduling that game as well. In light of security issues, 18 airports, including Pathankot and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, have been temporarily closed.
"The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is in contact with the Indian government regarding the situation."
The travel plans for the Mumbai Indians to Dharmshala remain uncertain, even if they opt for road transport. A source from the BCCI mentioned,
"Everything is fluid at the moment. Discussions are ongoing with franchises about travel options from Dharamsala to Delhi if the airport stays closed."
While road travel is being considered, this could complicate logistics for the media and broadcasting teams. Additionally, mock drills are scheduled across India today, May 7, with several regions, including Greater Kolkata, expected to experience power outages lasting between 15 to 30 minutes. This may lead to delays in the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
The current uncertainty follows the Indian government's "Operation Sindoor," launched shortly after a tragic attack on tourists in Pahalgam. This operation targeted nine terrorist group base camps, five located in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and four in Pakistan.
